[Applause] [Music] welcome everyone to the first live from central Tel Aviv besides Tel Aviv 2020 hybrid edition we're so excited to welcome you to this event so this is the new normal welcome to the new normal this is how events are going to look like it's a hybrid mix of in-person and online experiences and I am your host for today my name is Karen de la sorry you can find me online and skate three are three and three and the founder of besides Tel Aviv and I'm super excited to be with you here today after five years of running besides this is the first time we're doing it in this format so what is security besides all about anyway if
this is your first time at the b-sides event I want to tell you a little bit about the history of security besides and the history of besides Tel Aviv so security besides actually started a few years ago on the other side of the world all the way in Las Vegas that happened 11 years ago when a group of security researchers couldn't find their voice and their platform to speak their mind to share their ideas to connect with the community they felt like perhaps the mainstream events of that time were not suitable for a community security research event for hackers and by hackers so that was the idea for security besides it's now a community driven framework for events all over the
world and they've already been more than 500 security besides events from anywhere to Australia to Brazil from Switzerland to New York City and right here in Tel Aviv of course this year many security besides events are switching gears they're turning it up because of this new normal that we're living in so about 30 events have moved to a virtual format and we are happy to be part of that virtual wave of besides events hybrid events that allow people to connect with our message 30 events have decided to skip on 2020 and call it a bust can't blame them for making that and about 30 events have decided to postpone to later in the year in the
hopes that we could have in-person events ourselves the main security besides that's taking place in Las Vegas will only be taking place virtually but not in person so as I mentioned we started our event 2016 we were in a nice cosy room in Tel Aviv University which has been our host for all of our events until today and in 2019 last year was a massive event we moved to a room that was twice the size and was still not enough for all of our amazing participants and audience members what do we have lined up this year well more than 1500 people have signed up for besides Tel Aviv that is amazing that is our biggest registration
number yet and it's exciting I don't know how many of you are with us live right now on the stream or via slack but we will soon get those numbers in and we will tell you how many people are joining us in this online hybrid experience we have 16 awesome speakers including myself throughout the day with talks demos we have special community sessions we even have a yoga break but more on that later we had 44 called for papers submissions and we chose the best of the best of the best out of the people that wanted to speak for us and at the end we had to also bring together some speakers in person some speakers
remotely and that's part of what makes this a hybrid experience some of our speakers are right here in the room with me very far away safely but they're right here we had an amazing CTF each year we run our CTF just before our event starts this year the CTF took place earlier this week we had almost elite number of players I think we should kick some five people off just so we get to 1337 if you know what I'm talking about however it was an amazing CTF a lot of people chatted about it a lot of people to share their experiences if you enjoy capture-the-flag competitions you can certainly join our event next year and
stay tuned for the CTF winners announcement which will take place later today on this very stage and yes we do have a massive trophy we got you covered don't worry about that what else we have going we have eight amazing sponsors of course who made our event possible thank you so much to our sponsors now we'll highlight them as the day continues you you can also meet our sponsors on our slack or via the zoom rooms the zoom rooms will be available throughout the day during our breaks I'll give you details about that in a few minutes as well so what is a hybrid event well you hear great speakers from Tel Aviv and all over the
world and you can meet our sponsors on zoom' you can get swag stickers t-shirts there is even a competition to win a drone from one of our sponsors so stay tuned for that maybe you can guess which company has brought a drone to this fight you can solve amazing puzzles and maybe you can find your next job meet the team you'll be working with through zoom which is probably how you'll be working with them as this situation progresses we have our Lobby con on slack some of you have already joined us in fact I think more than 500 already there the general channel for all the conversations and chats is hashtag 20 - Lobby and you can meet our sponsors on
their own specific channels or slack and each of our sponsors is going to be there during the day and our speakers the ones that are here and the ones that are remote will be joining the channel hashtag 20 - talks to answer your questions so this is part of what makes a hybrid event we're here you're there but we're staying connected closer than ever before one might say and you get to stay home and stay safe which is the most important part of running our event this year it was the most important important decision what we had to make how do we keep our event going but make it safe for everybody now this is a
sneak peak of the agenda we have lined up for you today I'm giving the opening talk right now but we're going to have our opening keynote on the stage in just a few short minutes he is an amazing speaker is an actual rock star more on that later he's going to be followed by just some fantastic talks we're gonna have demos we're gonna have a panel talking about how security careers have changed in the age of corona we're going to talk about TCP we're going to learn about sandbox escaping we're going to see amazing things and for the second part of the day we have a maze content that still to come we're going to learn about the art of c2 we're going
to learn about how blue teams can get better at what they're doing but don't worry we always have that adversarial content as well we're also happy to feature something special this year the CTI league a very special community talk and of course our famous CTF announcement with the trophy and a closing keynote by the fantastic Chris kubecka funny story about Chris I first met her at DEFCON where he both attended a weird dinner with confused Congress people who didn't know what they were doing in DEFCON it was a fun experience but Chris is going to show you some of her different fun experiences and not so fun experiences in the trenches of the cold cyber war
between Iran and Saudi Arabia it's a fascinating topic with everything that's going on right now and then we'll close off the day and each of us gets to enjoy a nice cold beer in the safety of their own home of course so join us on the socials of course our hashtag this year hashtag be sites Tel Aviv 2020 you can join the lobby channel more than 500 people are there this is on slack you can find the invite link for the slack on our page right next to the video that you're watching right now if you look down there that's where the slack is and if you look down here that's where you should be seeing our sponsors and their
zoom rooms which will be available throughout the day and during our breaks we are of course also on Facebook and on Twitter and you can find us there as well this is the fantastic b-side salafi of 2020 core team that has been working super hard for more than six months to make this event a reality throughout the pandemic throughout everything that's happened we each have to change our lives and adapt we have our own challenges our own questions but we all got together and made this event a reality because of you because of our community and because when we reached out to our community to ask them do you want us to run an event today the answer
was an overwhelming yes make it remote make it hybrid but don't cancel besides Tel Aviv you spoke we listened and we're so excited to bring you this event today later throughout the day you will meet some of the team members right here on stage as they they will join me for all kinds of surprises and gasp where that we have planned out planned out for you but even the ones that are more camera-shy deserve the praise and support of the community for the hard work that they put in throughout the past couple of months so let's give well let's not give ourselves a warm round of applause let's thank our amazing volunteers I'm applauding our amazing
volunteers that are actually helping us out today some of them are here in person some of them are back home behind that slack keyboard waiting to chat with you waiting to engage in the conversation these are our amazing volunteers that have helped us out this year some of them are helping us for many years some of them are our past speakers like garland Lee Moore for example and I think it's amazing that some of our speakers come back to help us out so this is really part of what makes a besides besides it's a community event by volunteers for volunteers for the community by hackers and for hackers now these are amazing sponsors without without their support we couldn't make
this event a reality our titanium sponsor this year is apps flyer and you will be able to meet them throughout the day on their zoom room I bet they're there right now but don't leave me just yet you can wait until the first break to meet Apps flyer and learn about their HR team that wants to hire you we also have of course Intel a returning sponsor which is our platinum sponsor this year they will have an amazing panel during lunch time on their zoom room they're also going to focus on careers at Intel and you guessed it they have a drone waiting for you so stick around for that drone powered by Intel that you can find
a way to get if you solve the puzzle our gold sponsors this year some of them returning companies like checkpoint like cyber reason like clear sky like hacker one some of them are new to us this year perhaps new to you like new religion thank you so much to our gold sponsors that are continuing to support our event you will be able to meet them throughout the day in the slack channel and the zoom room and they all have different activities lined up prizes swag and things that they want to talk with you about because they are looking for people just like you we have an amazing City FC that helped us put together the
capture-the-flag competition by supporting us with prizes for the winning teams and you'll be able to hear more about that later this afternoon when we go through the CTF and of course we'll have the amazing winners announcement so thank you hack the box for joining us and supporting our event our long-term partners besides Tel Aviv partners is the BAL Vanek interdisciplinary cyber research center at Tel Aviv University while we're not at Tel Aviv University right now we thank them for the long-term support and they're helping us reach an audience that we would never reach an audience of academics of military generals of decision-makers that are meeting and learning about hackers and security research content real security research content for the
first time at besides Tel Aviv events for four years in a row so while we're not a 12 university this year we thank them for their continued support now I mentioned our capture the flag this is the team with that's behind our capture the flag you'll be able to learn more about the amazing team and the amazing CTF in the afternoon announcement I know a lot of you are waiting just for that now before I you know go back to being nice and friendly this is where I have to be serious for just a minute we still have a very strict code of conduct we want to make this experience as nice and as welcoming to everybody and that
extends over to the virtual space that means that on Twitter on slack Facebook zoom wherever you are engaging with our participants we hope and expect that you will respect one another and maintain our code of conduct if our moderators find or are told about some activity that does not conform to our code of conduct and is not appropriate for a conference of this type we will make sure that we remove that offending person or persons so please respect the code of conduct help us make this first of a kind hybrid experience amazing for everybody that's going to be a part of it now I mentioned our sponsors and they have been amazingly you know engaged
with us in making sure that you get the most out of this experience make sure you visit them throughout the day now before I turn it over to our next speaker I also want to share with you my own personal opinion about why this event is so important and why we put so much energy into making it happen with this current crisis with the situation that's going on around the world it has changed everybody's life it has made things difficult complex people are dealing with adversity they're dealing with illness they're dealing with job losses this is a moment like no other in the history of humanity and I I know I just said something that sounds like a cliche
but it's truly unprecedented in terms of how the world is dealing with this current pandemic yes we've dealt with different pandemics before but this is the 21st century and we live in a more global and connected era than ever before this is why I believe that the statement we say each year at besides is even truer than ever before with great power comes great responsibility and that means as hackers we have to step up and be that immune system in the digital age that we've been speaking about for so many years this is why this year we decided to include a special session about the CGI League which is an amazing initiative with volunteers from all over the world
and founders from all over the world including one of them here in Israel who will join us this afternoon to talk about how hackers are helping medical institutions and healthcare organizations that are being actively targeted by criminals trying to profit from this pandemic that is something that as friendly hackers should not allow to happen we should provide those healthcare professionals all the help and virtual support that they need at least the least we can do is defend them from criminals that are trying to profit from this situation so this is a moment in time where the corona virus and the kovat crisis has changed all our lives and it can be quite challenging we feel
like we're at home alone sometimes and home is our new office it's also a new yoga studio our new school our new entertainment center and it can feel quite challenging when you're all alone you're meeting people through video like you're meeting me right now and we know that it's not enough this is why we really worked so hard to make this event reality because we want to keep this community connected now more than ever before yes it's a challenge yes we're all working and maintaining our families and adapting to this new life to this new normal and sometimes it feels all we have to keep us company is the dozens of digital devices that we
have in our homes or you know maybe we have our families and our pets and that's fantastic but we all need a little bit more we all need community which is what decides Tel Aviv is all about I know that life has become complex I know that we're all defending our personal digital republics and personal space when we're out there in the world we know it's not easy and sometimes it feels like we are now on the frontlines in virtual space but also in the physical world as people that have to defend ourselves and to help our families dealing with all of this is not easy and we cannot you know let that slide we understand it's complicated
this is why today we also wanted to talk about that a little bit we wanted to invite you to use this event to use this opportunity for a reset a reset of how you're thinking a renaissance if you will an opportunity to adapt to this new normal to make new connections maybe even find your next job we are also going to have a yoga session to allow you an opportunity to move a little bit to stretch it out a little bit I invited my personal amazing yoga teacher to besides in order to share that with you because for me having my family close during yoga and keeping plants has kept me sort of saying throughout the past
couple of months so that's why we also have these amazing plants here they're not just for props they're actually going to be our speaker gifts this year alongside a very cool work from home kit so do some yoga get some plants we're gonna have a yoga break later on I hope we can take this opportunity opportunity to look into the future and see some amazing optimism possibilities and hope for all of us and by staying connected I believe and I hope that we can make that a reality I think that's what that's what besides tel aviv is all about now I want to introduce our yes he's a very very special person before I do that let me just put this
plant away so I don't drop it again and we know that this new normal is not easy but we think that today can be a fantastic opportunity to stay connected with one another so I'm very very grateful and thankful that you have decided to spend your day with us we're gonna have an amazing day and you're gonna have some really really great speakers that are here to share all of their ideas their knowledge with you people are online people are in slack people are here in the room we're gonna have of course breaks we're gonna have yoga we're gonna have sponsor activities and in a few seconds we're gonna have onstage
