CPE Sources: How to Make Your Life Easier

thanks for shutting up my name is Bruce Dennis now I purposely undersold this talk a cpe sources yeah we all know we all have certifications there's requirements for it ok big deal years ago I transitioned through a new job and I was just swamped I actually had problems getting you know the 20 in like you know that one year normally I came to the live CPEs like the one year like had some problems with it okay I won't have to ever get there and usually people wait until December like me you record all the things but a lot of people hey I never did that I gotta hurry up and get so just ways of making

this a lot easier so this does work I know for a fact for IFC ISACA it should work for comte EIA I just mind her so old that I'd never upgraded to there anyone's on it my understanding is this will work for PMI as well now when I'm talking about certifications I'm talking about obviously real companies not just you know the garbage ones now you ever see this company oh oh see eg you want nothing to do with them yes now I will read almost anything for education taking the test is optional for me but I want to see what the material is it might be something I can be used for something else a little bit

later I've seen this one like okay if I'm gonna sail on it you know you know I'll buy it I'll read the material a little bit later what I really really should have done was write that material up front because what I found out was okay so you know the annual membership is $400 okay fine whatever well you know the art of CPD requirements you have to do eight hours a year who cares all right isn't do that me standing on my head to maintain our certification you have to have a membership and our dashboard and you can only get the CPS through our company I'm paying $400 a year for something that you go look at their certification

to find out Google how many job openings are out there for them now after I started mocking their CEO and their chief marketing everything else this day I still get emails hey we have your personalized recommendations for you when I'm calling you herpes that you will not go away and you keep popping up that usually prompts somebody like we should probably take him off the email list these clowns no they still send me stuff so this is not the type of company we're here to talk about don't use anything like this actually I'm throwing it down now we've all seen udemy everybody gets to udemy you know blah blah blah like alright that's great now here's why it

becomes a little bit more important I can go out and watch the videos on you know you dab me like a little hay for $12 I don't know everybody else so my girlfriend has given me a list of things that she wants to go and see he's gonna be really annoyed if I use all my vacation time you go to conferences even though she was here yesterday she's not going to sign off one and we doing something fun or like I guess everything computers why is is it okay so again had another job where one of the struggles was I couldn't get out to to any kind of conference something like this to get it

more about these but all of these I can pull up something for free or I think a couple of them have started to change a little bit like instead of it being udemy start off when I was working with them I was 8 99 1999 went up to $12.99 I'm getting them for significantly less with that one first I put udemy up there itself is you actually can set a filter on udemy for free courses people don't realize that but they offer some that it okay they're using their own science of marketing they want people to come in like okay what we want to know are content one will you get me some courses that are interesting you

know to me and like again we're gonna at this point obviously I haven't doing some things for CPS but and there's some music things that I went up there like you know something I just really did like oh that's a good bass technique hey walking bassline I'd like to practice that it's in my card and nothing able to watch these things but I have a lot of content from you down now that's not the only site that's out there start talking about some other places where okay your mileage various on what you're looking for Danny has a lot of content across a lot of different areas now you to see I have found a lot of

very good horses out there on i.t now again I make it was a shorter talk but in my background I came from something consulting where if I wanted to go to sand I'm paying for this myself and I'm taking time off from work missed now equates to travel everything else it's been up costing me 15,000 or so for CNN scores like yeah I don't really have that to be used to giving up like that lottie's places have something on this page that are free or very very low cost yeah add to go I'm gonna give you some caveats with it and to go is a site that they had they host a lot of content would see it on a

community college page antigo was actually where they obtained it from now with this what you want to do is actually go to the antigo site look at the courses and then try to find a community college that has it there's some reason the community colleges offered at a lower price and Antigo does itself but not every Community College offers the same courses if you see something that had to go they say I really like this one okay now I'm checking around who fall for this course prices on this one not too bad I think I was paying evie only $30 a class it's a six-week class but I took some sequel some Oracle I took a couple other things on there

and again it check the box at VTE if you have a federal account work for the Fed any capacity they have some very very good content out there more than that account I have some PowerShell I have some other courses on penetration management there's a lot of things you need to be a fad maybe check it once a year so if your email has gov or something of that nature on it you can get into it but very well not always something that people know about in that space I have gone out and like hey I need to learn some PowerShell they have very good courses okay now career

alright Career Academy now this one is a paid annual subscription I pay $99 a year for it one there a number of certifications like I haven't think my P and P yet what my to do list they have the PMP and they have the updated PMP and they have some other things ok all right so some other job functions that I do such as the dashboards I need to create the way I actually have to do some things for work it's basically programming the Visual Basic so there's some things like I've limited resources on how do I do something inside of excel at that level I've actually found some parts out there like from career academy

yeah Pluralsight he started off a lot cheaper they may have been starting to inch their price up I left them boys but again another place it has some very good content on hey listen I really wouldn't go out and I wanted to pick up let's see we have this one and now back in the day we had the MCS CD ok great they have all the content for little start learning some of the or new nuances a couple other courses ok they do have some good ones now at the instead they've been inching their price of last two years oh and a see about you know that one if I want to continue with it hope and

learn pretty much what the name there's some self-explanatory ones on you know what you would kind of kind of take kind of and you would find there now the last two turrets that are up there again not everything is always IT related and I think is in the field as we start worrying about okay well it's the latest technology really forget about the business side of something a part of my job actually is taking some data and managing it where executives or something could look at the report and see where things stand in a dashboard level there are some pain and learning how to figure out how to do it some of the other courses are not always just

computer related if you cannot tie security into your core business well we're always thought it's like the the drain on resources begin with especially infants information security like that is it's just the just blocking things there's a couple courses I've looked at you know something I missed in oh yeah you know something now I can start speaking a language as you move on and he needs it to speak through the board there's a couple courses in there that are not always just technical related that worth taking a look at no last money left up there they've made some kind of change in the last couple months now I I have accounts with all these things it's not just some random

things I like it a lot of this talk came up again if a consultant I needed to get some sources that I don't know at that time or how I learned how I do this one oh I have accounts and all these the last one is simply a mispronouncing any way you see fit I now get daily emails all the stupid stuff I don't know what happened but a couple months ago they suddenly started doing that one never had it before I I I'm not sure and it's one of those be aware you will get daily emails on stupid things but we have this one yes

those cases not a big deal they are the only ones that like the OCE G yeah Oh CJ and Lee got a simply are the only ones to email me constantly with you know pinging here here's our stuff it's one of the one I'm gonna point out a little bit later that I'm going to recommend you absolutely send it to an address over here somebody else in there our time so you actually need that email to do some other functions with things so if you don't like the daily ping of like you know hair latest courses this oh yeah I saw it already get away from me that one you might want to okay now

this one we talk about some general sights now we all in technology want to learn like the latest stuff like I want to get into like you know some really something you can move my career all right p.m. where we've all heard of that one and okay all right now BM where you want to take the e of I'm sorry I don't remember the VM certification but I think it's a BCP you need to take vmware course vmware of course 5 2006 Allison $10,000 and it has to be the official one you can't go to Joe Schmoe who and somebody else figured Ali now you need to go there again you will have we're gonna be

naming exactly where I took the begin with our course hundred dollars I took it online and it checked the box and they got handed in for CPD's that year and they did really help me with some things on work where okay you know we're going to start exploring these and another one of my things that my company likes is technology picked up some VMware Alto we always hear about checkpoint and fire you know some of you know the firewalls and Cisco ll - a lot of time flies them in the radar Palo Alto again now the one line chorus looking for under $80 is very powerful in the software Hey and I heard about AWS watch football

well let's do and without on an al markets fee oh we have this great thing like you know the guy power 380 WS and statistical he has 2% chance of making this catch hell Reese I'm putting this up there is Amazon actually does have some training for free themselves if you go through a couple things like wait a minute they have that one everybody talks about it Amazon actually does have information up there so you know before you set up the account and like there's a couple of gotchas on some things like actually explain it to you no microsoft yeah okay Microsoft used to have a lot of hands-on labs they transitioned some things off but they do

have some things where you can actually punch in the Microsoft actually test some things online now am I talking about the DreamSpark account that's a whole different thing this is some things that Microsoft runs themselves again this is something else that low-cost or free yeah that's great I've been sitting around at home a lot what about getting up meeting people that's why we came here this is specific to this area but conceptually anybody else that like hey I'm not from the Philadelphia area like wonder if I can find some meetings like this now I have to say the local chapter here it's the reason I got my CSP there was somebody I knew there that harassed

me into taking the test I had taking it I don't know it up it's too hard he harassed me thirty four three and a half months so get past a lot of the reasons I passed was because he had given me some advice on some things and okay you want to do it this way do this it was right now again going out somebody I had met 20 years ago they meeting something else are you talking and he just always remembered me you know you were me Marty enough for this one I didn't think so he was right I probably would have never taken that test now I see two obviously it's a sponsoring company for

the CISSP there's a local Philly chapter on that one again another chance to start networking with some of your peers reaching out to a few other people now HD CIA I tech crime association crime investigation Association there is a Delaware Valley chapter again another one that ya met a few people talking very good resources membership it is I believe sixty-five dollars a year there are some restrictions on it like you know they'll tell you the site they also offer training if you remember there's some very good content online okay all right sat down go watch this one hey your shelf that meets up I believe the third Thursday in Philadelphia area the meetings start out

about all these different things there are sites that list hey you know I can get a con schedule I don't have to like you know find from the organizers look there are other ones that actually just list this for me and then if I'm looking Randall for next year which is the list of cons now interesting reading sources learning locations now Community College highly overlooked resource and most people have the degree here a little bit older hey Beauty College I'm working on dashboards for work now what I'm doing in Excel Digital Basic programming there's some logic of comparing some things and then if else then it check this and do this and create this action and okay I don't

anybody can ask me College have some courses I like you know something ok not bad I can do this one also hundred fifty dollars if I go to somebody to the corporate training now looks like seven hundred dollars for something so I can get in give apart so they need and get out and again it it's not always just IT related things on the business course there's so many other things like you know something a little weak in this one let me take a look at this the bang for the buck into college is something that is an overlooked resource

okay we're just gonna I'm gonna start running through some of these because at this point again in the links notice like it security aggregate everybody has two favorite sites we all look at it and I've been an interview and people have asked like hey where do you keep up with your latest security news or you know you know something about this one we could all name about three or four sources now had I really thought about this I would have cached the page or like you know showed up there but there's a site that I can go on there and it will list if everybody gave me their top three agents they want to go

to it's probably on there I get one place okay I see this article real quick I use that one when I am like you know the 15 minutes like all right listeners let's read some stuff real quick I haven't been out of anything like you know last two three days I get one place I don't have to go too dark reading insecurity week and then Christmas I go to one place from there I can leap over to the other ones security to now obviously YouTube has some information but they work on you know something just couldn't make it I had a conflict of Pi I just don't have the time I have something else going on the talk I really wanted

to see it now something I do want to learn that I can actually watch it through there well that's it's we've all heard of Anibal and we're actually running the esses has some information on their site content on how to use their product themselves yeah this is something free now a lot of people okay we are you guess which is there's some other options on there that like okay I could optimize as I can do this one when the vendor has something a lot of times like okay yeah take a quick look at it and it's free sure why not well Callie also produces some content as well there are some things on there and the Metasploit that for free now

something I thought was a complete waste of money oh wait I need that alright maybe a lot of time on it and the configuration and here's what I need to do with it you have sense okay it's not that hard to set up but for what I want to do I've got it I have two routers in my house I have two networks okay and I have you know the same providers on there and I need to make sure that's configure so that doesn't get broken up and I argue with them again there's a lot of arguing with that company that's when you start getting at the engineering defense course on there realize that it's not

always just about checking the boxes of CPEs guys this is something like hey listen I want to learn wait a minute I keep hearing about this power shelf thing like you don't know what's want to admit like hey listen I don't know anything about it all right okay three things that usually stop people from learning you're too proud you lazy for you too afraid wake up those three answers kill this excuses you go out and do this these are the resources where you can sit and learn and then starting pot inspiring the next generation of people behind you to come up like case or sharing a knowledge this web these websites like love all I did was we bought all their

in Google you can do this one okay if start out with something else I collected them even want to get into information security how do I learn how I do this I started collecting them and trying to organize all of them are you trying to do this here you go go here read this one do this look this kind of skill set just sign over here yes

I haven't seen what their requirements are like what you're saying like you know they're basically being you okay so IFC has a different domains and you know you can okay but where everybody else is not as familiar with with all the options of that now when I took my Security+ I took version 1 and then I took project Plus just to see if I could do it basically and I haven't gone back to that I have it no particular reason just I am I am grandfather I don't have to do the annual ones with that my understanding and talking to some other people from there is they like to see a well rounded thought process yes I mother learning so

if you start one power shell and then I go over to let's say auditing what my understanding again like I have not dealt with them forehand anything in it is they don't want to see the same thing out of somebody else they want you to continue to learn oh and going through udemy there's a lot of IT can I do the software development and I do information security can I do networking you have that many options that generally lets them check the box of it's not just the same thing over and over and there could be areas that like hey listen I wonder some database things that you might be weaker in whatever I am interested in learning this

there there should be enough options or things out there between all of these that they should be able to sign off on now if they don't like the webinars the meetings done you know there are some other options with that by the time I got to the end of this presentation if you come here you get your CPE there's a letter up there that kind of got done because I was the one that got audited and had to talk to Josh like can you send me this one please I forget it was icy or ISACA but I defend something in just like I don't want to go this again like all right look all right here fill it out okay so

so many as opposed to it so my approach was like look take it off don't care because how many do we have already enrolled it over how many expired okay am i over the 120 yes yeah I'm one of those like yeah I had a certain point like I just literally you take off whatever you want and it'll just be replaced anyway so what do you want to do with it and that seems to solve some arguments when you when they think that they're kind of being scammed at innovate in history or something like at that point that's when they tend to be a little bit more particular some things you get in consistently over the
